Likely, most of us have seen the classic film “Wizard of Oz” and enjoyed the entertaining imagery of “the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man” as they befriend Dorothy and help her journey through Oz and finally back to the farm in Kansas. At times both frightening and comical, that film has remained a classic for more than 80 years!
Here in Power of the Red Shoes Debra’s prophetic creativity looks anew at this old story from the vantage point of a daughter of the King, and asks these questions of the reader:
- Have you realized your authority through the Blood of Jesus?
- Have you discovered your identity, potential, and royal position in Christ?

Debra draws from her years as a Christian Counselor to teach about many life-lessons, using the Dorothy character from the Wizard of Oz as the springboard. As her thoughts for the book were forming, she asked God, “what are the Red Shoes all about?” God showed her that when Dorothy arrived in the Land of Oz, she received the Red Shoes almost immediately. But Dorothy did not understand the power and authority that she carried through them until she herself had walked the journey…in her Red Shoes.
Debra knew immediately the reference was to the blood of Jesus. She writes, “The authority and power we receive instantly when the blood is applied to our lives through salvation, but it takes the journey and experience of life and making memories with Him to understand what we carry and who we really are.”
The book skillfully allows you to use it as a study guide to learn and apply the life lessons it teaches. At the end of each chapter there are scripture references to meditate upon, a crafted prayer and a declaration. All of this helps you to personalize the teaching to your own life and circumstances.
The chapters delve into areas in which we all struggle. A few examples:
- Chapter 1 teaches us freedom from fear and allowing Jesus to give us that victory.
- Chapter 2 speaks to seeking God to make good choices.
- Chapter 3 helps us know how to stand on the promises of God. Each chapter uses life lessons pulled from the foibles of our dear character Dorothy as she journeys through Oz.
In the final chapter of the book Debra writes about Dorothy’s unrelenting perseverance to finally return home again. “It is through the gift of intimacy with the Father, that no matter the decisions that we have made, God will stay with us throughout any storm, and He will turn it around and use it for our good. Our choice may not be what He has desired for us, but no matter the path we have chosen, He will turn it into an adventure of a lifetime. Stay close, take His hand and trust, follow the Yellow Brick Road of His Glory, it’s Home or Bust!
