Finding Hope and Freedom after loss & life threatening challenges – Believing for the Impossible
Book by Jervae Brooks
Review by Jenny Anderson
This book chronicles the incredible and ongoing story of Sonrise’s Dwight and Jervae Brooks. Sustained for the Journey follows on the heels of Jervae’s A Battle for Destiny, which chronicles Dwight’s first improbable battle to live. Jervae shares her journey, beginning with her upbringing as a young Lutheran girl in small town Minnesota. After meeting sailor Dwight, back from Vietnam, in California, they marry. The couple muddle through life as grocer and homemaker when their life is changed forever by the charismatic renewal and baptism of the Holy Spirit. Ministering in the power of the Holy Spirit – in a wary and skeptical denominational world – changes their life together and adds a dynamic new focus to it.
The couple move to Dwight’s hometown Seattle and Jervae works her way from the mail room to a leadership position in the burgeoning International growth of Aglow International. After joining Sonrise, their faith is challenged by great personal tragedy, and two life threatening events that threaten to overwhelm them. But Sustained for the Journey is a story of overcoming in the face of overwhelming odds through the faithfulness of God.
As a book lover, I highly recommend this book for personal growth and even a little bit of drama. It will pull on all your emotions as Jervae’s story will put you on the edge of your chair in anticipation of what’s next.
Editor’s Note: since the writing of this review, Dwight has been healed of Parkinson’s (see lead story) and even a life threatening bout of e coli. Undeterred, the couple continue to minister and pray powerfully at the Sonrise Altar for those who come forward in need of healing.
